2025 Fertilizer Research and Education Program (FREP) Grant Solicitation

Each year, FREP solicits proposals for outreach, education, demonstration, and research projects related to nutrient and irrigation management for California agriculture.

Funding Categories

Outreach, education, and demonstration: Projects focused on increasing the adoption of efficient nutrient and irrigation management practices and technologies through technical education.

Research and demonstration: Projects investigating innovative practices and technologies and understanding processes related to nutrient and irrigation management.

Funding Availability

Grant funding of $75,000 per year for up to three years is available for projects addressing funding priorities outlined in FREP’s Request for Pre-Proposals (RFP).

Funding Timeline

The 2025 RFP will be released in November. Pre-proposals are due in December and are reviewed by the Fertilizer Inspection Advisory Board’s (FIAB)  Technical Advisory Subcommittee (TASC). TASC recommends select pre-proposals for advancement to Phase II of the grant process. Announcement of the TASC’s decision is made in February.

Phase II is the submittal of full proposals. Full proposals are evaluated by TASC and recommended to FIAB for funding. Project leaders will be notified if their project has been accepted in June 2025. Grant agreements are initiated in the fall and take effect on January 1, 2026.

All projects must have strong scientific merit and research projects should include outreach to end-users. Outreach and education projects should include measures of impact. Visit the FREP Grant page for a virtual Grant Application Workshop and examples of successful submissions.
