The Specialty Crop Ambassadors are spearheading projects that\u00a0support consumption, education, and access to California specialty crops.***<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By\u00a0Shane and Katherine McKenna<\/p>\n<p>July was\u00a0an exciting month at McKenna Farms!\u00a0 Our specialty watermelons looked\u00a0great &#8211; the Black Tail Mountain variety came in first\u00a0and the Sweet Siberian close behind.\u00a0 The Moon and Stars watermelons were\u00a0the last to ripen but their beautiful speckled rinds make them worth the wait and fun to watch grow. These watermelons are sure to make an impression on our student visitors!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/moon-and-stars-watermelon.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-437 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/moon-and-stars-watermelon.jpg\" alt=\"moon and stars watermelon\" width=\"291\" height=\"291\" \/><\/a>We are excited to have local students out to the farm this season and prepared\u00a0the field for these events.\u00a0 To facilitate student visits we have created wide furrows between our beds of specialty crops, so that the students can easily walk through the field and make observations.\u00a0 Our field was also designed with a wide path through the middle, so that we can accommodate a large class. This area will act as an outdoor classroom where students will gather before and after walking the field.\u00a0 Here they can share their observations and any questions they have about growing specialty crops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tomatoes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-440\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/tomatoes.jpg\" alt=\"tomatoes\" width=\"281\" height=\"210\" \/><\/a><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-438\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/peppers.jpg\" alt=\"peppers\" width=\"279\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the watermelons we have two varieties of cantaloupe, three gorgeous varieties of heirloom tomatoes, and several different sweet and hot peppers.\u00a0 The sweet peppers are all Hungarian heirloom varieties and turn a bright lipstick red when they ripen.\u00a0 The spicy peppers may not be as visually striking but they make up for it in flavor.\u00a0 From the mild Poblanos (prized for Chile Relleno) to the super spicy Habanero, these peppers are delicious!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>***This is the first in\u00a0our series of &#8220;Tales from the Specialty Crop Ambassadors&#8221; &#8211; blog posts written by farmers working with the\u00a0Center for Land-Based Learning \u00a0in Winters, CA.
