{"id":305,"date":"2014-10-13T16:40:41","date_gmt":"2014-10-13T16:40:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/?p=305"},"modified":"2014-10-13T16:40:41","modified_gmt":"2014-10-13T16:40:41","slug":"pittsburg-unified-school-district-students-to-visit-white-house-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/?p=305","title":{"rendered":"Pittsburg Unified School District students to visit White House Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Tomorrow, five students from the Pittsburg Unified School District in Contra Costa County will join First Lady Michelle Obama and students from schools in Arizona, Ohio and Washington D.C. to harvest vegetables from the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #095db9;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/about\/tours_and_events\/garden\">White House Garden\u00a0<\/a>and work with chefs to turn them into a healthy meal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">Pittsburg\u2019s students are attending the event in recognition of the\u00a0<a style=\"color: #095db9;\" href=\"https:\/\/edibleschoolyard.org\/node\/17079\">Farm to School programs<\/a>\u00a0the district has implemented. The district now has eight school gardens, incorporates local produce in school cafeterias, and provides nutrition education in the classroom as well as after-school programs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_175\" style=\"width: 305px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pittsburg-garden-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-175\" class=\" wp-image-175\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Pittsburg-garden-1.jpg\" alt=\"Harvesting Carrots at Willow Cove Elementary School (Pittsburg, CA)\" width=\"295\" height=\"395\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-175\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harvesting Carrots at Willow Cove Elementary School (Pittsburg, CA)<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">The students visiting the White House all come from Pittsburg\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #095db9;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pittsburg.k12.ca.us\/willowcove\">Willow Cove Elementary School<\/a>. The school\u2019s garden began last year, when second-grade teacher Elba Ramirez requested milk crates to start a small classroom garden. Instead, district child nutrition director Matthew Belasco offered to build a larger garden with raised beds. Ms. Ramirez and her students planted and cared for the garden throughout the year and then harvested the vegetables, which were served in the cafeteria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">CDFA\u2019s\u00a0<a style=\"color: #095db9;\" href=\"http:\/\/cafarmtofork.com\/\">Office of Farm to Fork\u00a0<\/a>has been working closely with Pittsburg Unified\u2019s Food Service Department to develop these programs and incorporate more locally grown food in district cafeterias. The office is also working with Pittsburg and surrounding school districts to directly connect them with nearby farmers to provide local food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #333333;\">\u201cI am so pleased that the White House has recognized the Pittsburg Unified School District for all the hard work it has put into its amazing farm to school program,\u201d said CDFA Secretary Karen Ross. \u201cIt helps connect our students with food grown right here in California and, to the extent possible, from Contra Costa and surrounding counties. CDFA and its Office of Farm to Fork is committed to these types of programs.
