{"id":1074,"date":"2017-02-02T18:33:32","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T18:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/?p=1074"},"modified":"2017-02-02T18:33:32","modified_gmt":"2017-02-02T18:33:32","slug":"increased-focus-on-food-security-at-uc-merced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/?p=1074","title":{"rendered":"Increased focus on food security at UC Merced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grapes-hands_625.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1076\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grapes-hands_625.jpg\" alt=\"grapes hands_625\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grapes-hands_625.jpg 625w, https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grapes-hands_625-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/TalesFromTheField\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/grapes-hands_625-624x416.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>UC Merced is relaunching its branch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blumcenter.ucmerced.edu\/\">Blum Center for Developing Economies <\/a>with a focus on food security, with a hope to make it a hub for food-security-related research and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>Economics Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucmerced.edu\/content\/kurt-schnier\">Kurt Schnier<\/a>, with the School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Arts, and Karina Diaz Rios, a nutrition specialist in the UC Cooperative Extension, will lead the rejuvenated Blum Center, with administrative help from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hsri.ucmerced.edu\/\">Health Sciences Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0(HSRI).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to create a community on campus to address issues of food security,\u201d Schnier said. \u201cWe want to help engage students, faculty members and the community to have a direct effect on people\u2019s\u00a0lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Merced County\u2019s economy is largely based around agriculture, yet many people there do not have food security. The food insecurity rate in the area is 15.5 percent, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/mmcfb.org\/learn\/hunger-in-our-community.html\">Merced County Food Bank<\/a>, compared to a statewide average of 13.9 percent. Nearly 30 percent of those considered food insecure in Merced County are children. Food insecurity is defined as a lack of reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.<\/p>\n<p>The Blum Center at UC Merced started in 2013 and is affiliated with the Blum Center at UC Berkeley, which was founded by a gift from investment banker and UC Regent Richard C.\u00a0Blum. \u00a0There are Blum Centers on several other UC campuses, including UCLA, UC Davis and UC Berkeley, the school from which Blum\u00a0graduated.\u00a0Each center has a slightly different focus, though all work toward the betterment of the global society.<\/p>\n<p>***Cross-posted from <a href=\"http:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=12303\">Planting Seeds Blog<\/a>***<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UC Merced is relaunching its branch of the Blum Center for Developing Economies with a focus on food security, with a hope to make it a hub for food-security-related research and outreach.
