{"id":724,"date":"2015-04-07T13:14:03","date_gmt":"2015-04-07T20:14:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=724"},"modified":"2022-05-16T09:37:40","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T16:37:40","slug":"pseudococcus-elisae-borchsenius-banana-mealybug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=724","title":{"rendered":"Pseudococcus elisae Borchsenius: Banana Mealybug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em><\/strong><strong> Borchsenius: Banana Mealybug<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Pest\u00a0Rating: \u00a0A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> is frequently intercepted by CDFA and requires a pest rating proposal to support its pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> is a polyphagous Neotropical mealybug that feeds on a variety of cultivated plants, but most often on banana and other Musaceae<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Known hosts include: <strong>Annonaceae<\/strong>: sugar apple (<em>Annona squamosa<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>); <strong>Araceae<\/strong>: <em>Aglaonema <\/em>spp.<sup>1<\/sup>, <em>Dieffenbachia <\/em>spp.<sup>1<\/sup>; <strong>Musaceae<\/strong>: <em>Musa <\/em>spp.<sup>1<\/sup>, latundan banana (<em>Musa sapientum<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>), plantain (<em>Musa paradisiaca<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>); <strong>Rubiaceae<\/strong>: robusta coffee (<em>Coffea canephora<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>), arabica coffee (<em>Coffea arabica<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>), <em>Ixora <\/em>spp.<sup>1<\/sup>; <strong>Rutaceae<\/strong>: key lime (<em>Citrus aurantifolia<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>).\u00a0 <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> may be transported long distances when infested plants or fresh plant parts are moved.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Worldwide Distribution<\/strong><\/span>: <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> is native to the Neotropical region.\u00a0 It is established in Mexico<sup>3<\/sup>, Guatemala<sup>3<\/sup>, Honduras<sup>3<\/sup>, Panama<sup>3<\/sup>, Colombia<sup>3<\/sup>, Ecuador<sup>3<\/sup>, Brazil<sup>3<\/sup>, Chile<sup>3<\/sup>, and Cuba<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 It was confirmed to be established in Hawaii in 1984<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Official Control<\/strong><\/span>: <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Chile, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Paraguay<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Distribution<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Interceptions<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2014 <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> was intercepted by CDFA\u2019s high risk programs, border stations, and dog teams 97 times.\u00a0 Interceptions have occurred on bananas, cut flowers, nursery stock, and other fresh plant parts.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) \u00a0Climate\/Host Interaction<\/strong>: <em>Pseudococcus elisae<\/em> is a tropical species with a host range that includes some plants grown outdoors in the warmer regions of California (e.g. key lime, banana).
