{"id":5888,"date":"2018-12-06T09:12:31","date_gmt":"2018-12-06T17:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5888"},"modified":"2019-01-30T17:05:36","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T01:05:36","slug":"white-prunicola-scale-pseudaulacaspis-prunicola","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5888","title":{"rendered":"White Prunicola Scale | Pseudaulacaspis prunicola"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola <\/em><\/strong><strong>(Maskell) | White prunicola scale<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hemiptera: Diaspididae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h3>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>In 2018, this scale was found in Solano County on <em>Ligustrum<\/em> sp. bonsai that had been purchased in Fresno County.\u00a0 This scale currently has a Q-rating.\u00a0 A permanent pest rating proposal is required to support an official pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong> \u00a0<em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> is a polyphagous scale that is reported to feed on plants in 15 families.\u00a0 Among the recorded hosts are fruit and ornamental trees, including <em>Carica<\/em>, <em>Malus<\/em>, and <em>Prunus<\/em> species (Agnello et al., 2015; Follett, 2000; Miller and Davidson, 2005). \u00a0Death of trees can result from feeding by this scale (Miller and Davidson, 2005).<\/p>\n<p>There is some uncertainty regarding the species identity of <em>P. prunicola<\/em>.\u00a0 This scale was considered a synonym of <em>P. pentagona<\/em> until 1980.\u00a0 Kreiter et al. (1999) reported individuals in a single population that could be identified morphologically as either species.\u00a0 <em>Pseudaulacaspis pentagona<\/em> is an A-rated (by CDFA) pest that is highly polyphagous and is reported to cause damage to a wide variety of plants, including peaches in the southeastern United States and papaya in Hawaii (Branscome, 1999; Follett, 2000).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> is thought to be native to temperate China or Japan (Miller and Davidson, 2005).\u00a0 It has been introduced to Europe, the eastern United States, and Hawaii.\u00a0 In the eastern United States, it is reported from Florida north to Massachusetts (Miller and Davidson, 2005).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control:<\/u><\/strong> <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> does not appear to be under official control in any country. \u00a0However, <em>P. pentagona<\/em>, which has been considered by some to be a senior synonym of <em>P. prunicola<\/em>, is a regulated pest in some countries (EPPO Global Database, 2018).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution:<\/u><\/strong> \u00a0Although <em>P. prunicola<\/em> has been collected at times in the state, this species does not appear to be established in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 The<em> P. prunicola<\/em> found on <em>Ligustrum<\/em> sp. bonsai in Solano County in 2018 represents the only interception of this species in California.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola <\/em>would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Consequences of Introduction:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> has proven itself capable of becoming established in a variety of climates, and it is highly polyphagous.\u00a0 It could probably establish a widespread distribution in California. \u00a0Therefore, <em> prunicola <\/em>receives a<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> High (3)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range: <\/strong><em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> is reported to feed on plants in at least 15 families.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">High (3)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 High (3) has a wide host range.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Reproductive and Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> is likely to be transported via movement of infested plants.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> <em>Pseudaulacaspis prunicola<\/em> is reported to attack fruit and ornamental trees.\u00a0 Feeding damage is reported to cause death of trees.\u00a0 Infestations of this scale could lower crop yield and increase production costs.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">A, B<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A. The pest could lower crop yield.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>B. The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C. The pest could trigger the loss of markets (includes quarantines).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D. The pest could negatively change normal cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">E.
