{"id":5779,"date":"2018-09-13T13:51:46","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T20:51:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5779"},"modified":"2024-04-26T10:51:30","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T17:51:30","slug":"cercospora-insulana-sacc-1915","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5779","title":{"rendered":"Cercospora insulana Sacc. 1915"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Cercospora insulana <\/em><\/strong><strong>Sacc. 1915<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: C<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h3>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>On May 11, 2018 a postal shipment of statice dried flowers showing symptoms of leaf spots was intercepted by the CDFA at a Federal Express (FedEx) office.\u00a0 The shipment was destined to a private owner in Alameda County and had originated in Hawaii.\u00a0 A sample of the symptomatic flowers was sent to the CDFA Plant Pathology Lab for disease diagnoses.\u00a0 On May 17, 2018 Cheryl Blomquist, CDFA plant pathologist, identified the fungus, <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> associated with the leaf spots.\u00a0 The present status and rating of <em>C. insulana<\/em> is reevaluated here.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> is a fungal plant pathogen in the Mycosphaerellaceae family, that causes leaf spot of statice and other host plants.<\/p>\n<p>The pathogen is globally widespread.\u00a0 In the USA, <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> has only been reported from Florida and California (Farr &amp; Rossman, 2018).\u00a0 In California, prior to its most recent detection, the pathogen has been reported on <em>Armeria<\/em> sp. and <em>Limonium<\/em> spp. in northern and southern coastal region of California (French, 1989).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Disease cycle<\/u>:<\/strong> In general, plants infected with <em>Cercospora<\/em> species produce conidiophores (specialized hypha) that arise from the plant surface in clusters through stomata and form conidia (asexual spores) successively.\u00a0 Conidia are easily detached and blown by wind often over long distances.\u00a0 On landing on surfaces of a plant host, conidia require water or heavy dew to germinate and penetrate the host.\u00a0 Substomatal stroma (compact mycelial structure) may form from which conidiophores develop.\u00a0 Development of the pathogen is favored by high temperatures and the disease is most destructive during summer months and warmer climates.\u00a0 High relative humidity is necessary for conidial germination and plant infection.\u00a0 The pathogen can overwinter in or on seed and as mycelium (stromata) in old infected leaves (Agrios, 2005). <em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Dispersal and spread<\/em>: <em>Dispersal and spread<\/em>: air-currents, infected nursery plants, infected leaves, seeds (Agrios, 2005).<\/p>\n<p><em>Hosts: Armeria<\/em> sp., <em>A. maritima<\/em> (thrift seapink), <em>Limonium<\/em> sp., <em>L.<\/em> <em>bonducellii<\/em> (Algerian statice), <em>L. californicum<\/em> (California sea lavender\/marsh rosemary), <em>L. gmelinii<\/em> (syn. <em>Statice gmelinii<\/em>; Siberian statice), <em>L. sinuatum<\/em> (syn. <em>Statice sinuata<\/em>; statice\/wavyleaf sea lavender), <em>L. vulgare<\/em> (common sea lavender) (CABI, 2018; French, 1989); <em>Nerium indicum<\/em> (Indian oleander) (XueWen <em>et al.,<\/em> 2017)<\/p>\n<p><em>Symptoms<\/em>: \u00a0Leaf spot symptoms caused by <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> in field-grown statice were reported from Italy as circular, brown lesions with a darker edge, 3-6 mm in diameter and surrounded by an orange or reddish halo.\u00a0 Old lesions enlarged and coalesced, causing yellowing and senescence of leaves.\u00a0 Heavy infections resulted in severe defoliation and retarded growth or death in panicles. Lesions were also present on the wings of the flower scapes, while scapes proper were not involved (Nicoletti <em>et al<\/em>., 2003).<\/p>\n<p><em>Damage Potential: <\/em>Quantitative losses due to <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> have not been reported.\u00a0 If left uncontrolled, leaf spotting may lead to disease outbreaks under favorable conditions, wherein photosynthetic areas can be reduced.\u00a0 Heavy infections may result in severe defoliation, retarded plant growth and death of flowers in statice, and likely, in other ornamental host plants.\u00a0 Nursery productions of ornamental hosts under controlled and conducive conditions for pathogen development would also be of concern in California.\u00a0 However, damage potential due to this pathogen is likely to be similar to other <em>Cercospora<\/em> diseases which is usually low (Agrios, 2005).\u00a0 Furthermore, fungicide applications and sanitary measures including the use of clean seed have been used to successfully control <em>Cercospora<\/em> diseases (Agrios, 2005).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Asia<\/em>: China (XueWen <em>et al.,<\/em> 2017), India, Myanmar; <em>Africa<\/em>: Kenya, Malta, South Africa, Zimbabwe; <em>Europe<\/em>: Caucasus, Italy, Portugal, Russia: <em>North America<\/em>: USA (California, Florida), Haiti; <em>Oceania<\/em>: Australia, New Zealand (Farr &amp; Rossman, 2018)<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> Presently, <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> is on the \u2018Harmful Organism\u2019 list for Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Israel (USDA PCIT, 2018).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> \u00a0<em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> is distributed in northern and southern coastal areas of the State (French, 1989).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> To date, the recent detection of <em>C. insulana<\/em> (see \u2018initiating event\u2019) has been the only interception reported.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> has only been detected in northern and southern coastal regions in California. These limited regions provide adequate moisture that favor development of the pathogen in host plants like statice.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 <strong>Score:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range:<\/strong> The known host range is limited to statice, thrift seapink and Indian oleander in the genera <em>Limonium<\/em>, <em>Armeria<\/em> and <em>Neria.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. <strong>Score:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong> 1<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Medium (2) has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; High (3) has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential: <\/strong><em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> has high reproductive potential resulting in the successive production of conidia which primarily depend on air currents, infected plants and seed for dispersal and spread.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Score:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Medium (2) has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> Quantitative losses due to <em>Cercospora insulana<\/em> have not been reported. However, for nurseries particularly, infected host plants with leaf spots could result in lowered value resulting in use of fungicidal treatments thereby increasing production costs, and loss of markets.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">B, C<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A. The pest could lower crop yield.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>B<\/strong>. The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>C<\/strong>. The pest could trigger the loss of markets (includes quarantines).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D. The pest could negatively change normal cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">E. The pest can vector, or is vectored, by another pestiferous organism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">F. The organism is injurious or poisonous to agriculturally important animals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">G. The organism can interfere with the delivery or supply of water for agricultural uses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) causes 0 or 1 of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> causes 2 of these impacts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; High (3) causes 3 or more of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Environmental Impact:<\/strong> Home garden plantings of statice species may be impacted if the pathogen was to establish under favorable environmental conditions and in the absence of adequate disease control.\u00a0 The pathogen has not been detected in oleander in California.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the environmental impact of the pest on California using the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environment Impact: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">E<\/span>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A. The pest could have a significant environmental impact such as lowering biodiversity, disrupting natural communities, or changing ecosystem processes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">B. The pest could directly affect threatened or endangered species.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C. The pest could impact threatened or endangered species by disrupting critical habitats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D.
