{"id":5769,"date":"2018-09-13T00:10:10","date_gmt":"2018-09-13T07:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5769"},"modified":"2024-04-26T10:51:45","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T17:51:45","slug":"citrus-viroid-v","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5769","title":{"rendered":"Citrus Viroid V"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating\u00a0 for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Citrus viroid V<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Pest Rating: B<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h3>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: \u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The risk of infestation of <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> (CVd-V) in California is evaluated and a permanent rating is herein proposed.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:<\/strong> The origin of <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> (CVd-V) is uncertain (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008a).\u00a0 In a study in Spain on the response of <em>Citrus<\/em> species and citrus-related genera to viroid infections, Serra and other researchers (2008a) originally detected CVd-V in <em>Atalantia citroides<\/em>, a citrus relative plant propagated on rough lemon rootstock and graft-inoculated with artificial mixtures of different viroids.\u00a0 The viroid source was provided to them by a researcher at the University of California, Riverside and purified preparations were shown to be infectious in Etrog citron (<em>Citrus medica<\/em>), a classical indicator plant of citrus viroids. \u00a0Subsequently, CVd-V was considered a new species of the genus <em>Apscaviroid<\/em> in the family <em>Pospiviroidae<\/em> (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008a).\u00a0 Viroids are classified within two families: <em>Pospiviroidae<\/em> and <em>Avsunviroidae<\/em>. \u00a0Citrus are natural hosts of several viroid species that belong to the family <em>Pospiviroidae<\/em>.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>A. citroides<\/em> was identified as an unusual viroid host since it was resistant to all previously known citrus viroids, yet capable of replicating CVd-V (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008b).\u00a0 Infectious assays conducted by Sierra et al. (2008) showed that CVd-V in Etrog citron exhibited mild symptoms, however, co-infections with either<em> Citrus bent leaf viroid <\/em>(CBLVd) or <em>Citrus dwarfing viroid<\/em> (CDVd, previously <em>Citrus viroid III<\/em>), also belonging to the genus Apscaviroid, showed synergistic effects in contrast to single infections of CVd-V or the other two viroids, however, titers of the viroids remained the same in singly or doubly infected plants (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008a).<\/p>\n<p>While the origin of CVd-V is not known, Pakistan may be one of the geographic origins of the viroid (Serra et al., 2008a, b; Parakh et al.<em>,<\/em> 2017).\u00a0 Serra et al. (2008a) suggested that the viroid was present, but overlooked or unnoticed, in field sources containing <em>Hop stunt Viroid<\/em> or <em>Citrus dwarfing viroid<\/em> \u2013 both of which have electrophoretic mobilities similar to CVd-V.\u00a0 CVd-V has been found with some variations in its nucleotide sequence, in several countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America (<em>see<\/em> \u2018Worldwide Distribution).<\/p>\n<p>In June 2016, the Citrus Clonal Protection Program-National Clean Plant Network (CCPP-NCPN), University of California, Riverside, California detected <em>Citrus Viroid V<\/em> in citrus budwood samples submitted by the CDFA for virus and viroid testing under the mandatory California (CA 3701) Citrus Nursery Stock Pest Cleanliness Program.\u00a0 These budwood samples were taken from asymptomatic redblush grapefruit (<em>Citrus paradisi<\/em>) and variegated calamondin (<em>C. madurensis<\/em>) from a nursery in Tulare County.\u00a0 This find marked the natural occurrence of CVd-V in California and corroborated the earlier report of CVd-V<sup>CA<\/sup> variant in the State (Dang et al.<em>,<\/em> 2018; Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008b).<\/p>\n<p>Hosts: <em>Citrus<\/em> spp.\u00a0 including \u2018Sanguinelli\u2019, Salustiana\u2019, and \u2018Ricart navelina\u2019 sweet oranges (<em>Citrus x sinensis<\/em>), \u00a0\u2018Oroval\u2019 and \u2018Hernandina clementines (<em>C. clementina<\/em>), \u2018Fino\u2019 and \u2018Verna\u2019 lemons (<em>C. limo<\/em>n), \u2018Sevilano\u2019 and \u2018Cajel\u2019 sour orange (<em>C. aurantium<\/em>), \u2018Clausellina\u2019 satsuma (<em>C. unshiu<\/em>), Temple mandarin (<em>C. temple<\/em>), Tahiti lime, Palestine sweet lime (<em>C. limettioides<\/em>), calamondin (<em>C. madurensis<\/em>), \u2018Calabria\u2019 bergamot (<em>C. bergamia<\/em>), \u2018Orlando\u2019 tangelo (<em>C. paradisi x C. tangerina<\/em>), \u2018Page\u2019 mandarin [(<em>C. paradisi x C. tangerina<\/em>) x <em>C. clementina<\/em>], and \u2018Nagami\u2019 kumquat (<em>Fortunella margarita<\/em>),\u00a0 and Etrog citrus (<em>Atlantia citroides<\/em>) (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008); \u2018Shiranui\u2019 [(<em>C. unshiu x C. sinensis<\/em>) x<em> C. reticulata<\/em>] (Ito and Ohta, 2010); \u2018Moro blood\u2019 sweet orange (<em>Citrus x sinensis<\/em>) (Bani Hashemian et al.<em>,<\/em> 2013); redblush grapefruit (<em>C. paradisi<\/em>) (Dang et al.<em>,<\/em> 2018).<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms: \u00a0\u00a0<em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> induced mild characteristic symptoms of very small necrotic lesions and cracks, sometimes filled with gum, in the stems of the viroid indicator plant, Etrog citron.\u00a0 However, CVd-V reacted synergistically when Etrog citrus was co-infected with either <em>citrus bent leaf viroid<\/em> (CBLVd) or <em>Citrus dwarfing viroid<\/em> (CDVd), and showed severe stunting and epinasty with multiple lesions in the midvein.\u00a0 Plants co-infected with CBLVd and CVd-V exhibited severe stem cracking characteristic of CBLVd, but without gum exudates, whereas plant co-infected with CDVd showed necrotic lesions (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008a). Symptoms induced by CVd-V alone in commercial species and varieties are presently not known since commercial trees may be co-infected with several viroids (Ito and Ohta, 2010; Serra et al., 2008a).\u00a0 <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> may be present in asymptomatic citrus plant tissue \u2013 as recently evidenced by its detection in asymptomatic budwood collected from Tulare County, California.<\/p>\n<p>Damage Potential:\u00a0 The effect of CVd-V in commercial citrus rootstock-scion combinations, alone and in combination with other viroids, is yet unknown, however, Serra et al. (2008b) suggested that CVd-V could reduce tree size and yield as has been reported for clementine trees grafted on trifoliate orange co-infected with several viroids. Therefore, the need for nursery planting stock free of CVd-V is important.<\/p>\n<p>Transmission:\u00a0 Similar to other citrus viroids, CVd-V is graft-transmitted and is spread mainly through the propagation of infested material.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> \u00a0<em>Africa<\/em>: Oman (Serra et al.<em>,<\/em> 2008), Tunisia (Hamdi et al.<em>,<\/em> 2015); <em>Asia<\/em>: China, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan (Cao et al.<em>,<\/em> 2013), Iran (Bani Hashemian et al., 2010), Turkey (\u00d6nelge and Yurtmen, 2012); <em>Europe<\/em>: Spain (Serra et al., 2008); <em>North America<\/em>: USA (Serra et al., 2008).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> is a disease agent of concern that is tested for in the CDFA Citrus Nursery Stock Pest Cleanliness Program (3 CCR \u00a7\u00a7 3701, et seq.).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> Tulare County (Dang et al.<em>, <\/em>2018).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:<\/strong> None reported.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> is likely to establish within infested propagative citrus materials in all citrus-growing regions of California.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Score:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>3<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Medium (2) may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range:<\/strong> <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> has a moderate host range that is limited to several species and varieties of <em>Citrus<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Score:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2) <\/strong>has a moderate host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; High (3) has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> <em>Citrus viroid V<\/em> replicates autonomously within infested plants and is spread mainly through the propagation and movement of infested planting materials to non-infested regions.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">2 <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact: <\/strong>The effect of CVd-V in commercial citrus rootstock-scion combinations, alone and in combination with other viroids, is yet unknown, however, it has been suggested by Serra et al. (2008b) that CVd-V could reduce tree size and yield.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">A, B, C<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A<\/strong>. The pest could lower crop yield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>B<\/strong>. The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>C<\/strong>. The pest could trigger the loss of markets (includes quarantines).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D. The pest could negatively change normal cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">E. The pest can vector, or is vectored, by another pestiferous organism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">F.
