{"id":5540,"date":"2018-06-26T16:20:14","date_gmt":"2018-06-26T23:20:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5540"},"modified":"2018-08-13T13:58:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T20:58:25","slug":"thrips-trichromothrips-priesneri-bhatti","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5540","title":{"rendered":"Thrips | Trichromothrips priesneri (Bhatti)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating\u00a0 for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Thrips<em> | Trichromothrips priesneri <\/em><\/strong><strong>(Bhatti)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Thysanoptera: Thripidae <\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong> Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h3>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Trichromothrips priesneri<\/em> was tentatively reported to be established on the island of Maui, Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 It is currently Q-rated, and a permanent pest rating proposal is required to support an official pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong> <em>\u00a0<\/em>Adult <em>T. priesneri<\/em> are bicolored, with a dark brown abdomen and wings and white (with brown markings) thorax and head (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 The size is probably similar to that of other <em>Trichromothrips<\/em> species: 1-1.5 mm (Nakahara, 1993). \u00a0Very little information is available on this species.\u00a0 In Taiwan, <em>T. priesneri<\/em> has been collected from unidentified grass and <em>Ipomoea nil<\/em> (Wang, 2008).\u00a0 In Hawaii, it was found in a coastal, wetland area with dodder and Cyperaceae (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 It is not known if these plants are fed upon by the thrips.\u00a0 Other species of <em>Trichromothrips<\/em> have been reported to feed on ferns, bamboo, orchids, and other plants (Goldarazena et al., 2012; Mound and Masumoto, 2004; Ng and Mound, 2015), although again, it is possible that some of these records do not represent feeding but rather plants that the thrips happened to be resting on.\u00a0 One species of <em>Trichromothrips<\/em> was reported to be a pest on orchids and various greenhouse plants, but no further information was found to support this (Mound et al., 2016).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Trichromothrips priesneri<\/em> is found in, and is presumably native to India (Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh states) (Rachana and Varatharaja, 2017; Tyagi and Kumar, 2016).\u00a0 It is also reported from Taiwan and Hawaii; these reports are presumed to represent introductions, although the identification of the Hawaii specimens appears to have been tentative (Mound et al., 2017; Wang, 2008).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control:<\/u><\/strong> <em>Trichromothrips priesneri <\/em>is not known to be under official control anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Trichromothrips priesneri<\/em> is not known to be present in California (Symbiota Collections of Arthropods Network).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Trichromothrips priesneri<\/em> has not been intercepted in California (CDFA Pest and Damage Report Database, 2017).<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Trichromothrips priesneri <\/em>w<em>o<\/em>uld pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> The areas that <em> priesneri<\/em> occurs in have a tropical or subtropical climate, suggesting that this species requires such climates. This is expected to limit the potential distribution of this species in California to a limited area.\u00a0 Not enough is known about the feeding habits of <em>T. priesneri<\/em> to consider the presence of host plants in the potential distribution of this species in California.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>T. priesneri <\/em>receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium (2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) <\/strong>may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range: <\/strong>Although the collection of specimens in Taiwan from grass and <em>Ipomoea nil<\/em> suggests that these may be host plants, too little is known about the biology of <em> priesneri<\/em> to assess its host range. To account for uncertainty, the host range will be assumed to be moderate.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>T. priesneri<\/em> receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) <\/strong>has a moderate host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Reproductive and Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> <em>Trichromothrips priesneri<\/em> has wings and presumably flies.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium (2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> Little is known about the biology of <em> priesneri<\/em>, but it presumably feeds on living plants.\u00a0 At least one species of <em>Trichromothrips<\/em> is reported to be a pest.\u00a0 It is possible that <em>T. priesneri<\/em> could become a pest if it became established in California.\u00a0 If this happened, lower crop yields and increased crop production costs could result.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000;\">A, B<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A. <\/strong>The pest could lower crop yield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u00a0B.\u00a0<\/strong>The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C.
