{"id":5322,"date":"2018-04-30T14:12:53","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T21:12:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5322"},"modified":"2018-06-22T12:50:00","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T19:50:00","slug":"thrips-indusiothrips-seshadrii-priesner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5322","title":{"rendered":"Thrips | Indusiothrips seshadrii Priesner"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating\u00a0 for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Indusiothrips seshadrii <\/em><\/strong><strong>Priesner: thrips<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Thysanoptera: Thripidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h5>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>A specimen of <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> was recently found on Oahu Island, Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 It is currently Q-rated, and a permanent pest rating proposal is required to support an official pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong> <em>\u00a0Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is a small (~1 mm in length), whitish-yellow thrips (Priesner, 1952).\u00a0 It has been reported from unidentified ferns in India and Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017; Priesner, 1952).\u00a0 This species appears to be rarely collected, and little additional information is available regarding its biology.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is known from, and is presumed native to India and Malaysia (Kud\u00f4, 1992; Priesner, 1952).\u00a0 It has been introduced to Oahu, Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control:<\/u><\/strong> <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is not known to be under official control anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is not known to occur in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii <\/em>has not been intercepted in California.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii <\/em>w<em>o<\/em>uld pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> Although <em> seshadrii<\/em> is presumed to feed on ferns, the species it feeds on are not known. California has many species of native ferns, and it is possible that <em>I. seshadrii<\/em> could find suitable host plants over much of the state. \u00a0However, this thrips is currently known to be limited to areas with a tropical climate.\u00a0 For this reason, <em>I. seshadrii <\/em>is not expected to be capable of establishing over more than a very limited area.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii <\/em>receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Low (1)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range: <\/strong><em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> may feed on ferns. However, it is not known what species in particular act as hosts.\u00a0 The fact that it is known from India, Malaysia, and Hawaii suggests that more than a single species of fern is involved.\u00a0 To incorporate this uncertainty, host range will be considered to be moderate. \u00a0Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) has a moderate host range.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> This species has wings and presumably flies (Priesner, 1952).\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is presumed to feed on ferns.\u00a0 It has not been reported to be a pest, and it does not appear to pose an economic threat to California. \u00a0Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Low (1)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Economic Impact:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A. The pest could lower crop yield.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">B. The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C. The pest could trigger the loss of markets (includes quarantines).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D. The pest could negatively change normal cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">E. The pest can vector, or is vectored, by another pestiferous organism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">F. The organism is injurious or poisonous to agriculturally important animals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">G. The organism can interfere with the delivery or supply of water for agricultural uses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Low (1) causes 0 or 1 of these impacts.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) causes 2 of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) causes 3 or more of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Environmental Impact:<\/strong> <em>Indusiothrips seshadrii<\/em> is presumed to feed on ferns. No reports were found indicating the extent, if any, of damage inflicted by these thrips on ferns.\u00a0 However, this could simply be because the host plants are not economically significant.\u00a0 There are many rare, native ferns in California.\u00a0 If this thrips became established in California, it could feed on and impact our native ferns.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the environmental impact of the pest on California using the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental Impact:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000;\">B<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A.
