{"id":5320,"date":"2018-04-30T14:12:56","date_gmt":"2018-04-30T21:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5320"},"modified":"2018-06-22T12:48:41","modified_gmt":"2018-06-22T19:48:41","slug":"a-thrips-coremothrips-pallidus-hood","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5320","title":{"rendered":"A Thrips | Coremothrips pallidus Hood"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Coremothrips pallidus <\/em><\/strong><strong>Hood: a thrips<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Thysanoptera: Thripidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<h5>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> was recently reported to be established in Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 It is currently Q-rated, and a permanent pest rating proposal is required to support an official pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong> <em>\u00a0Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> is a tiny (~1 mm in length), pale yellowish-white thrips (Hood, 1925).\u00a0 It has been found feeding on avocado leaves in Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).\u00a0 Adults and larvae were found on <em>Guettarda scabra<\/em> (Rubiaceae) in Guadeloupe, which suggests that this plant was being fed upon (Etienne et al., 2015).\u00a0 It has also been found on leaves of other plants in the families Bixaceae, Combretaceae, Sterculiaceae, and Ulmaceae, but it is not known if these records represent feeding (Cavalleri, 2015; Etienne et al., 2015; Goldarazena et al., 2012; Hood, 1925).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> has been reported from Central America (Panama), South America (Brazil), and the Caribbean (Guadeloupe, Saint Vincent, and Trinidad) (Cavalleri, 2005; Etienne et al., 2015; Monteiro, 2002; Symbiota Collections of Arthropods Network).\u00a0 It was recently reported to be established on the islands of Hawaii and Oahu in Hawaii (Mound et al., 2017).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control:<\/u><\/strong> <em>Coremothrips pallidus <\/em>is not known to be under official control anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> is not known to be present in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> has not been intercepted in California.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Coremothrips pallidus <\/em>w<em>o<\/em>uld pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> appears to feed on at least two species of plants, including avocado. Avocado is widely planted in southern California.\u00a0 However, this thrips is apparently restricted to tropical or subtropical areas.\u00a0 It is possible that it could become established in a limited portion of California.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>Coremothrips pallidus <\/em>receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range: <\/strong>Although <em> pallidus<\/em> has been reported from several plants species, only two of these plants are considered verified hosts here: Avocado (because the report specified that feeding had occurred) and <em>Guettarda scabra<\/em> (because adults and larvae were found on this plant), representing two families. It is likely that some of the other plants in the families listed above (under Background) were also fed upon.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>C. pallidus<\/em> receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) has a moderate host range.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> has wings and presumably flies.\u00a0 It could also be dispersed artificially via transport of infested plant material.\u00a0 Lastly, it may be capable of wind-aided dispersal.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a<strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\"> Medium (2)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> has been reported to feed on avocado, which is an important crop in California.\u00a0 If this species was established in California, it is possible that it could lower the value of avocados.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Low (1)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">B<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">A. The pest could lower crop yield.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>B. The pest could lower crop value (includes increasing crop production costs).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">C. The pest could trigger the loss of markets (includes quarantines).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">D. The pest could negatively change normal cultural practices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">E. The pest can vector, or is vectored, by another pestiferous organism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">F. The organism is injurious or poisonous to agriculturally important animals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">G. The organism can interfere with the delivery or supply of water for agricultural uses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">1<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Low (1) causes 0 or 1 of these impacts.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) causes 2 of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) causes 3 or more of these impacts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5) Environmental Impact:<\/strong> <em>Coremothrips pallidus<\/em> feeds on plants in at least two families. If this species became established in California, it would encounter plants that are not present in the area of its current distribution.\u00a0 If it fed on these plants, it is possible that this thrips could have an impact on natural communities.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the environmental impact of the pest on California using the criteria below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Environmental Impact: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">A<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A.
