{"id":5168,"date":"2018-04-13T12:09:28","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T19:09:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5168"},"modified":"2018-08-27T11:54:06","modified_gmt":"2018-08-27T18:54:06","slug":"beetle-dyscinetus-dubius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=5168","title":{"rendered":"Beetle | Dyscinetus dubius"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">California Pest Rating for<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Beetle<em> | Dyscinetus dubius <\/em>(Olivier)<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Pest Rating: A<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">PEST RATING PROFILE<\/h3>\n<h5>Initiating Event:<\/h5>\n<p><em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> (Olivier) is currently Q-rated.\u00a0 A permanent pest rating proposal is required to support an official pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5>History &amp; Status:<\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background:<\/u><\/strong> <em>\u00a0Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is a reddish-brown beetle approximately 1.5 to 2 cm in length.\u00a0 The larvae are whitish C-shaped grubs that live underground and feed on roots.\u00a0 This beetle is reported to be a pest (through larval feeding) of potato, rice, and soybeans in Brazil (Ferreira &amp; Barrigossi, 2006; Ferreira &amp; Martins, 1984), but it has also been associated with, and may feed on corn and elephant ear (<em>Xanthosoma sagittifolium<\/em>) (Araceae) (Joly &amp; Escalona G., 2010).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong><strong><u>:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is widely distributed throughout Mexico, the Caribbean (including Cuba and Trinidad), Central America (including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama), and South America (including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Suriname, and Venezuela) (Ferreira &amp; Martins, 1984; Joly &amp; Escalona G., 2010; Neita-Moreno &amp; Yepes,\u00a0 2011).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control:<\/u><\/strong> <em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is a prescribed pest in Guyana (Caribbean Invasive Alien Species Network).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution: <\/u><\/strong>\u00a0<em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is not known to be present in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions:<\/u><\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Dyscinetus dubius <\/em>has been intercepted at a border station on bananas from Ecuador (1183969).<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Dyscinetus dubius <\/em>w<em>o<\/em>uld pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5>Consequences of Introduction:<\/h5>\n<p><strong>1)\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> <em>Dyscinetus dubius <\/em>appears to be restricted to areas with a subtropical to tropical climate, and this may be expected to limit the potential distribution of this species in California. This beetle is reported to feed on at least four plant families, including Poaceae and Solanaceae, and would likely find suitable food plants over much of the state.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This beetle could possibly become established over a limited portion of California.\u00a0 Therefore, <em>Dyscinetus dubius <\/em>receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2) <\/strong>may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range: <\/strong><em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is a generalist and has been reported to feed on plants in the families Araceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Solanaceae. Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">High (3)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Medium (2) has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> <em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is collected at light, so it can fly.\u00a0 It can be dispersed artificially through movement of infested plant material.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium (2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 Low (1) does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>\u2013 Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2013 High (3) has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> <em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> is a recognized pest of several crops, among them rice.\u00a0 California rice production in 2016 was valued at $649 million (USDA, 2018).\u00a0 Potatoes and corn, which are also grown in California, could also be impacted.\u00a0 If <em>Dyscinetus dubius<\/em> was established in California, it could lower crop yield and increase production costs of these crops.\u00a0 It could also lead to a loss of markets.\u00a0 Therefore, it receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">High (3)<\/span> <\/strong>in this category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Economic Impact:\u00a0 <span style=\"color: #008000;\">A, B, C<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>A.
