{"id":3022,"date":"2016-12-21T14:54:51","date_gmt":"2016-12-21T22:54:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=3022"},"modified":"2022-05-16T11:24:43","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T18:24:43","slug":"paracoccus-marginatus-williams-and-granara-de-willink-papaya-mealybug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=3022","title":{"rendered":"Paracoccus marginatus Williams and Granara de Willink: Papaya mealybug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Paracoccus marginatus <\/em><\/strong><strong>Williams and Granara de Willink: Papaya mealybug<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hemiptera:\u00a0 Pseudococcidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: \u00a0A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>February 26, 2014, USDA distributed a Deregulation Evaluation of Established Pests (DEEP) report proposing to change the status of <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em>, papaya mealybug, from actionable to non-actionable for the entire United States.\u00a0 The insect is currently unrated by CDFA, so a pest rating proposal is needed to determine future direction.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is a polyphagous mealybug that feeds on at least 55 plant species in at least 18 families<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Although papaya is the preferred host, other hosts include economically important crops such as citrus, avocado, cotton, cherry, tomato, and a variety of ornamentals<sup>1,2,3<\/sup>.\u00a0 Infestations of the mealybug are typically observed as cotton-like clusters on the above ground portions of plants<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Feeding can result in chlorosis, plant stunting, leaf deformation, early leaf and fruit drop, a heavy build-up of honeydew, and plant death<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0\u00a0 <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> can move long distances through commerce in infested fruit, plants, or leaves.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is believed to be native to Mexico and Central America.\u00a0 From there it has spread throughout the Caribbean, southern Asia, and to Benin, Ghana, Togo in Africa, and French Guiana in South America.\u00a0 It was found in Florida in 1998, Puerto Rico in 2001, Guam in 2002, and Hawaii in 2004.\u00a0 \u00a0A greenhouse infestation in Illinois in 2001 was successfully controlled with biological control agents.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is not known to be under official control in any states or nations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> has been intercepted four times by California, on <em>Plumeria rubra<\/em> and betel from Hawaii, papaya from Mexico, and rambutan fruit from Honduras.\u00a0 USDA has intercepted the mealybug nearly 650 times since 1994, mostly on fruit and other plant parts from Mexico destined for California<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> (Papaya mealybug) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> The present distribution of <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is limited to USDA plant hardiness zones 10+. In California this corresponds with portions of the southern part of the state as well as greenhouses.\u00a0 Papaya mealybug receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium(2<\/span>)<\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 <strong>Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">2<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range:<\/strong> <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is known to feed on 55 species of plants in at least 18 familes<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High(3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. <strong>Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">3<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong> Mealybugs reproduce rapidly; <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is thought to lay 100-600 eggs each and have up to 15 generations per year.\u00a0 Mealybugs may be dispersed long distances by wind, as hitchhikers on clothing or animals, and through commerce in infested plants and plant parts.\u00a0 Papaya mealybug receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High(3)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest. <strong>Score: <span style=\"color: #008000;\">3<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong> <em>Paracoccus marginatus<\/em> is not reported to cause economic damage in Florida and has been successfully controlled by biological control on several Caribbean islands.\u00a0 Papaya mealybug is not expected to lower crop yield, change normal cultural practices, vector other organisms, injure animals, or interfere with water supplies.\u00a0 Although <em> marginatus<\/em> is not known to be listed as a quarantine pest by any nation, due to its limited worldwide distribution and frequent interceptions on fruit it is reasonable to conclude that it may disrupt some markets for fresh fruit exports.\u00a0 It is also possible that the mealybug may increase crop production costs in the nursery and\/or fruit industries by triggering additional treatments or disfiguring plants with their presence.\u00a0 Papaya mealybug receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium(2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
