Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> is a polyphagous moth whose caterpillars feed on a wide variety of agricultural and ornamental plants<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 The moth has continuous overlapping generations throughout the year<sup>1,2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Eggs are deposited singly on the underside of leaves and hatch in about 6 days<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 The young larvae consume one side of the leaf<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 As they grow larger they chew holes through the leaf and feed on the leaf margin, flowers, and fruits<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Some of the known hosts include: <strong>Acanthaceae:<\/strong> acanthus (<em>Acanthus mollis<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>), black-eyed susan (<em>Thunbergia alata<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>); <strong>Amaranthaceae:<\/strong> redroot (<em>Amaranthus hybridus<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>), beet (<em>Beta vulgaris<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>); <strong>Araliaceae:<\/strong> paper plant (<em>Fatsia japonica<\/em><sup>2<\/sup>); <strong>Urticaceae:<\/strong> nettle (<em>Urtica<\/em> sp.<sup>2<\/sup>); <strong>Violaceae:<\/strong> <em>Viola<\/em> sp.<sup>2<\/sup>. \u00a0Eggs, caterpillars, or pupae of <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> may be transported long distances when infested plants or fresh plant parts are moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> is probably native to Australia or New Zealand.\u00a0 It has spread through much of Asia, Africa, Southern Europe, and the Pacific<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It was first found in Hawaii in 1877 and now occurs on all islands<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Costa Rica and Japan<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 All species of <em>Chrysodeixis<\/em> are listed as harmful by Japan and the Republic of Korea<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> has been intercepted 507 times by CDFA\u2019s high risk programs and dog teams.\u00a0 Interceptions have occurred on plants and fresh plant parts from Hawaii and Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> (green garden looper) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> Host plants of <em>Chrysodeixis eriosoma<\/em> are widely grown in California and the moth may be expected to establish wherever suitable hosts are available.
