Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> is a sap-sucking insect that feeds on several dozen species of <em>Eucalyptus<\/em> and <em>Corymbia<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Infestations of the insect can lead to leaf loss, thinning tree canopies, and branch dieback<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 The bugs can be transported long distances when plants or fresh plant parts are moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> is thought to be native to Australia.\u00a0 From there it has spread to New Zealand<sup>2<\/sup>, southern Africa<sup>2<\/sup>, southern South America<sup>2<\/sup>, Italy<sup>2<\/sup>, Portugal<sup>2<\/sup>, and Mexico<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Peru<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> has only been found in Los Angeles County.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> has never been found in any regulatory situations in California.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> (bronze bug) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> Eucalyptus trees are grown throughout much of California and <em>Thaumastocoris peregrinus<\/em> is likely to establish wherever they grow.
