{"id":2039,"date":"2016-06-21T15:29:17","date_gmt":"2016-06-21T22:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=2039"},"modified":"2022-06-15T13:54:12","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T20:54:12","slug":"meghimatium-bilineatum-benson-chinese-slug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=2039","title":{"rendered":"Chinese Slug  |  Meghimatium bilineatum (Benson)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Chinese Slug\u00a0 |<em>\u00a0 Meghimatium bilineatum <\/em><\/strong><strong>(Benson)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gastropoda: Philomycidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> has been intercepted by CDFA\u2019s high risk programs, border stations, and dog teams and presently has a temporary rating of \u201cQ\u201d.\u00a0 A pest rating proposal is required to assign a permanent pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> is a terrestrial slug that lives in humid environments beneath plants and emerges to forage after rainfall<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is also found on cultivated land, landscaped urban areas, smooth-barked live trees, rocks, and under dead logs<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Like other slugs <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> is presumably polyphagous on a wide variety of living and decaying plants.\u00a0 The slug may be transported long distances on nursery stock.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> is native to the mid and lower Yangtse basin of China<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 From there it has spread to Taiwan, Japan, Hawaii, Java, and Russia<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Interceptions by CDFA on consignments from Florida and Ecuador indicate that it could be more widespread.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> is not known to be under official control in any other states or nations<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 CDFA has intercepted <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> 16 times on nursery stock and ti leaves from Hawaii, Ecuador, and Florida.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Meghimatium bilineatum<\/em> is a polyphagous terrestrial slug and is likely able to establish anywhere suitable moisture is available in California.
