Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> is an important pest in orchid greenhouses in Korea and Hawaii<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 The thrips feed in aggregations on flowers<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It seems to prefer Bamboo orchids (<em>Arundina graminifolia<\/em>), but also infests other orchids in the genera <em>Vanilla<\/em>, <em>Phalaenopsis<\/em>, <em>Spathoglottis<\/em>, <em>Dendrobium<\/em>, <em>Epidendrum<\/em>, <em>Cattleya<\/em>, and <em>Cymbidium<\/em><sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is a pest of cultivated <em>Vanilla<\/em> in India<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> may be transported long distances when infested plants or cut flowers are moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> is native to Asia where it is widespread from India to Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It was first found in Hawaii in 2007<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Japan and the Republic of Korea<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> has been intercepted twice by CDFA on orchids from Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> (Bamboo orchid thrips) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> is a tropical thrips that is likely to only establish in the warmest areas of southern and coastal California and in orchid greenhouses. It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Low (1)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Known Pest Host Range<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Dichromothrips smithi <\/em>typically feeds on eight genera of plants in the orchid family.\u00a0 In China it is reported to have a much broader host range than anywhere else it has been found<sup>4<\/sup>.\u00a0 There it is reported to feed on plants in 10 families including Amaryllidaceae, Leguminosae, Cucurbitaceae, and Solanaceae<sup>4<\/sup>.\u00a0 \u00a0It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pest Dispersal Potential<\/span>:<\/strong> Thrips are capable or rapid reproduction and local dispersal.\u00a0 They may be transported long distances when infested plants or cut flowers are moved.\u00a0 <em>Dichromothrips smithi<\/em> receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest.
