Status:<\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is a foliage-feeding moth.\u00a0 The moth overwinters in egg masses of 150-424 eggs on tree branches<sup>1,2<\/sup>.\u00a0 Egg hatch coincides with bud break.\u00a0 The caterpillars from each egg mass stick together and spin a silky tent in a crotch of the tree<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 During evening, night, and early morning hours the caterpillars emerge from the tent to eat leaves<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 They feed for 4-6 weeks then move individually to protected places to pupate<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Moths emerge about 3 weeks later to mate and lay eggs<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 There is only one generation per year<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Preferred hosts include: <strong>Rosaceae:<\/strong> cherry, peach, and plum (<em>Prunus<\/em> spp.<sup>2<\/sup>), apple and crabapple (<em>Malus<\/em> spp.<sup>2<\/sup>), hawthorns (<em>Crataegus<\/em> spp.<sup>2<\/sup>), and sometimes pear (<em>Pyrus<\/em> spp.<sup>2<\/sup>).\u00a0 In addition to the preferred hosts the caterpillars will also feed on a wide variety of hardwoods<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 A similar moth <em>Malacosoma californium<\/em> (western tent caterpillar) is native to and widespread in California; however, its host preferences are aspens, willows, cotton, and mountain mahogany<sup>4<\/sup>.\u00a0 Eastern tent caterpillar poses a distinct threat to California\u2019s specialty crops. \u00a0It may be transported into the state as a contaminating pest (cocoons or larvae) on a wide variety of objects or as egg masses on potted trees or fresh tree branches.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is native to the eastern United States and Canada<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is not known to have invaded any other nations.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u><\/strong>: <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Japan, the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Morocco, the Russian Federation, Taiwan, and Turkey<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u><\/strong>:\u00a0 Between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2014 <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> was intercepted 108 times by CDFA\u2019s border stations.\u00a0 Interceptions typically occur on outdoor items and goods associated with household moves.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> (eastern tent caterpillar) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5>Consequences of Introduction:<\/h5>\n<p><strong>\u00a01) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is native to a wide variety of climates in eastern North America and its host plants are widely grown in California. Eastern tent caterpillar can be expected to establish a widespread distribution in this state and receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Known Pest Host Range<\/span>:<\/strong> Preferred hosts of <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> are limited to seven varieties of plants in one family.\u00a0 However, it can also feed on other hardwood trees.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium (2) <\/strong><\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Economic Impact<\/span>:<\/strong> Eastern tent caterpillar is not expected to lower crop yields.\u00a0 In their native range the moths often defoliate entire trees.\u00a0 They may increase crop production costs in California as orchards and nurseries treat to mitigate damage.\u00a0 <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by several of California\u2019s trading partners.\u00a0 The moth could disrupt exports of nursery stock but it is not likely to follow fresh fruit pathways.\u00a0 Eastern tent caterpillar is not expected to change cultural practices or vector other organisms.\u00a0 Exposure to the caterpillars is thought to cause the equine disease mare reproductive loss syndrome (MRLS) which is responsible for abortions in horses<sup>5<\/sup>.\u00a0 <em>Malacosoma americanum<\/em> is not expected to disrupt water supplies.\u00a0 Eastern tent caterpillar receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
