{"id":1708,"date":"2016-03-09T14:33:10","date_gmt":"2016-03-09T22:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1708"},"modified":"2022-06-15T13:54:06","modified_gmt":"2022-06-15T20:54:06","slug":"parmarion-martensi-simroth-a-semi-slug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1708","title":{"rendered":"A Semi-Slug  |  Parmarion martensi (Simroth)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>A Semi-Slug\u00a0 |\u00a0<em> Parmarion martensi<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Simroth)<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Gastropoda: Helicarionidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: A<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> has been intercepted by CDFA and presently has a temporary \u201cQ\u201d rating.\u00a0 A pest rating proposal is required to determine a permanent pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is a terrestrial semi-slug that is polyphagous on a variety of living and decaying plant material.\u00a0 In Hawaii a survey found the semi-slug on: <strong>green plants:<\/strong> lettuce, fennel, sweet potato, banana, passion fruit, lemongrass, <em>Heliconia<\/em>; <strong>fallen fruit:<\/strong> avocado, guava, citrus, papaya, mango; <strong>under plastic or plastic-like materials:<\/strong> black plastic sheeting, tarps, drainpipes, plant pots; <strong>compost and trash cans<\/strong>; <strong>food preparation and sink areas:<\/strong> outdoor sinks, dishes, grills, a toothbrush; <strong>pet food<\/strong>; <strong>structures:<\/strong> decks, walkways, walls; <strong>palm trees<\/strong>; <strong>catchment tanks<\/strong>; <strong>ripe fruit: <\/strong>papaya; <strong>miscellaneous plant debris<\/strong><sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 Semi-slugs may be transported long distances when infested plants or plant parts are moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is presumably native to continental Southeast Asia<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It has also been found in Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Japan, Taiwan, Samoa, and American Samoa<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It was first found in Hawaii on the islands of O\u2019ahu in 1996 and Hawai\u2019i in 2004<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is not known to be under official control in any other states or nations<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> Since March 2009 <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> has been intercepted by CDFA\u2019s high risk programs and dog teams 37 times on nursery stock and plant parts imported from Hawaii.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is a polyphagous semi-slug and is likely able to establish anywhere suitable moisture is available in California.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Known Pest Host Range<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is polyphagous on a wide variety of living and decaying plants.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pest Dispersal Potential<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> produces large numbers egg masses<sup>1<\/sup> and may be transported long distances when infested nursery stock is moved.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Economic Impact<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em> is an efficient vector of the parasitic nematode that causes rat lungworm disease in humans<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 The semi-slug often feeds on green plants such as lettuce, contaminating the produce with nematodes that can be present in tiny immature semi-slugs or slime.\u00a0 This could have significant impacts on California\u2019s salad industry.\u00a0 Although the semi-slug is not known to be on any quarantine list, its presence in the state may affect markets for California produce if any of it were found to be contaminated with rat lungworm disease.\u00a0 This may lower crop yields if produce were unmarketable and increase crop production costs as growers ensure that fields are free from <em>Parmarion martensi<\/em>.\u00a0 The semi-slug receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
