{"id":1661,"date":"2016-03-08T15:35:19","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T23:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2022-05-16T09:53:26","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T16:53:26","slug":"lindingaspis-floridana-ferris-floridana-scale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1661","title":{"rendered":"Lindingaspis floridana Ferris: Floridana Scale"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em><\/strong><strong> Ferris: Floridana Scale<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hemiptera: Diaspididae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: \u00a0B<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> was intercepted by a CDFA dog team in a parcel of mango fruit shipped from Florida to Sacramento.\u00a0 This insect presently has a temporary rating of \u201cQ\u201d.\u00a0 A pest rating proposal is required to support a permanent pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> is an armored scale insect that feeds on the leaves of mango (<em>Mangifera indica<\/em>), fig (<em>Ficus<\/em> spp.), and olive (<em>Olea<\/em> spp.)<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 It may be transported long distances when infested plants or fresh plant parts are moved.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> is presumably native to Asia.\u00a0 It was first found in Florida in 1921<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 It has also spread to Haiti and Jamaica<sup>1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> is listed as a harmful organism by Costa Rica, Japan, and Korea<sup>3<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> has been intercepted by CDFA\u2019s dog teams and high risk programs 6 times since August 1, 2014.\u00a0 It was also intercepted once on July 3, 2001.\u00a0 All of the interceptions for which data was recorded occurred on mango fruit.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> (floridana scale) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> Species of <em>Ficus<\/em> and <em>Olea<\/em> are commonly planted as ornamentals and crops throughout much of California. Mango plants are restricted to warmer parts of the state.\u00a0 <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> is likely capable of establishment everywhere suitable hosts are available.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Known Pest Host Range<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> is known to feed on three genera of plants in three plant families.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium (2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<br \/>\n<\/span>&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pest Dispersal Potential<\/span>:<\/strong> Scale insects have high reproductive rates and may disperse long distances when infested plants or plant parts are moved.\u00a0 They may also be spread by wind or by hitchhiking on plants, animals, or equipment.\u00a0 <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Economic Impact<\/span>:<\/strong> Although <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> feeds on economically important plants, it is not considered to be a pest<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 There is a closely related similar scale, <em>Lindingaspis rossi,<\/em> that is already present in California<sup>4,5<\/sup>. <em>Lindingaspis rossi<\/em> is highly polyphagous and feeds on the leaves of many plants including all of the hosts of <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em><sup>5<\/sup>. Therefore if <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> were to establish in California it is not expected to have major economic impacts.\u00a0 It is not expected to lower crop yields, lower crop values, change cultural practices, vector other organisms, injure animals, or interfere with water supplies.\u00a0 However, Costa Rica, Japan and Korea list <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> on their harmful organism lists<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 Japan, Korea, and Vietnam list <em>Lindingaspis rossi<\/em> on their harmful organism lists<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is therefore possible that <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> could affect exports to some markets such as Costa Rica.\u00a0 <em>Lindingaspis floridana<\/em> receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Low (1)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
