{"id":1658,"date":"2016-03-08T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2016-03-08T23:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1658"},"modified":"2022-05-16T09:53:14","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T16:53:14","slug":"ananca-bicolor-fairmaire-red-black-false-blister-beetle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1658","title":{"rendered":"Ananca bicolor (Fairmaire): Red-Black False Blister Beetle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Ananca bicolor<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Fairmaire): Red-Black False Blister Beetle<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Coleoptera: Oedemeridae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest Rating: \u00a0B<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event: <\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>The false blister beetle <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> was recently intercepted by CDFA\u2019s high risk programs on a shipment of <em>Plumeria<\/em> cut flowers from Hawaii.\u00a0 The beetle is presently assigned a temporary rating of \u201cQ\u201d.\u00a0 A pest rating proposal is required to support a permanent pest rating.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong><u>Background<\/u>:\u00a0<\/strong> <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> adults are nocturnal and highly attracted to lights<sup>1,2<\/sup>.\u00a0 They are considered a nuisance pest and may enter dwellings in large numbers.\u00a0 The adult beetles feed on pollen.\u00a0 The larvae are not well documented but similar beetle grubs feed on rootlets and rhizomes<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> may be transported long distances when infested cut flowers are moved or as a contaminating pest.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Worldwide Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> is Polynesian in origin<sup>4<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is known to be established in Samoa, Tahiti, Marquesas, Tonga, Ellice Island, and New Hebrides<sup>4<\/sup>.\u00a0 It invaded Hawaii sometime before 1885<sup>4<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Official Control<\/u>:<\/strong> <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> is not listed on any nations\u2019 harmful organisms lists<sup>5<\/sup> and is not known to be under official control anywhere.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Distribution<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>California Interceptions<\/u>:<\/strong>\u00a0 <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> has been intercepted by CDFA four times. Three interceptions were on cut <em>Plumeria<\/em> flowers from Hawaii and one was on green vegetables.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> (Red-black false blister beetle) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Climate\/Host Interaction<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> is only known to be established on tropical islands.\u00a0 Almost all oedemerid larvae are limited to wet\/moist environments.\u00a0 This indicates that if the beetle were to establish in California it is likely to be limited to warm coastal areas.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Low (1)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Known Pest Host Range<\/span>:<\/strong> <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> adults are polyphagous on a wide variety of pollen.\u00a0 Grubs are presumed to be equally polyphagous on organic matter in soil.\u00a0 The beetle receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High (3)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Pest Dispersal Potential<\/span>:<\/strong> In Hawaii <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> occurs in large numbers indicating that it likely has a high reproductive rate.\u00a0 Despite its abundance and more than a century of transoceanic commerce, <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> has not spread beyond Polynesia, indicating that it does not often spread via trade.\u00a0 <em>Ananca bicolor<\/em> receives a<span style=\"color: #008000;\"> <strong>Medium (2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest.
