{"id":1095,"date":"2015-09-25T16:03:03","date_gmt":"2015-09-25T23:03:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1095"},"modified":"2022-05-16T09:38:54","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T16:38:54","slug":"ferrisia-dasylirii-cockerell-mealybug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1095","title":{"rendered":"Ferrisia dasylirii (Cockerell):  Mealybug"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>California Pest Rating for<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Cockerell):\u00a0 Mealybug<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Hemiptera:\u00a0 Pseudococcidae<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Pest\u00a0Rating: \u00a0C<\/strong><\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5><strong>Initiating Event:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>From 1953 to 2012, <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> was incorrectly considered a synonym of B-rated <em>Ferrisia virgata<\/em>.\u00a0 A recent revision corrected this and resurrected <em>F. dasylirii<\/em> as a valid species<sup>1<\/sup>.\u00a0 On August 28, 2014 Dr. Gillian Watson notified me that she had examined specimens in the California State Collection of Arthropods and confirmed that <em>F. dasylirii<\/em> is present in the state.\u00a0 Because this mealybug is not on CDFA\u2019s pest rating list, a pest rating proposal is needed to determine future direction.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>History &amp; Status:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Background<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> is a polyphagous mealybug that feeds on a wide variety of plants, including many ornamentals and some crops.\u00a0 It may be spread long distances by commerce in infested plants or plant products.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Worldwide Distribution<\/strong><\/span>: <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> appears to be of Neotropical origin.\u00a0 It is found from the United States south to Chile<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is also found in Hawaii and several Caribbean islands<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Official Control<\/strong><\/span>: <em>Ferrisia virgata<\/em> is considered a quarantine pest by Israel, Japan, and New Zealand<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is likely that these trading partners will also consider the newly resurrected <em>F. dasylirii<\/em> as a quarantine pest if it is intercepted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Distribution<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Specimens of <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> in the state collection indicate that the mealybug is present in the environment of Alameda County (1962), Imperial County (1993, 2003), Los Angeles County (2000), San Bernardino County (1978, 1979, 1982), San Diego County (1978), and San Joaquin County (1980, 1995).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Interceptions<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 From August 19, 2014 to August 26, 2015 <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> was intercepted 24 times by California\u2019s high risk programs and dog teams on fruit and plants shipped from Florida, Hawaii, Michigan, Mississippi, and within California.<\/p>\n<p>The risk <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Consequences of Introduction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction<\/strong>: <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> is polyphagous and suitable host plants are grown throughout California. It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High(3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<br \/>\n\u2013\u00a0<strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u2013 <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range:<\/strong> <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> feeds on a wide variety of plants in at least 29 families<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 It receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High(3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u2013 <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential<\/strong>: Mealybugs reproduce rapidly and can spread locally by crawling or by wind.\u00a0 They may move long distances rapidly by hitchhiking on clothing, animals, or equipment or by the movement of infested plants or plant products.\u00a0 <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>High(3)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<br \/>\n\u2013\u00a0<strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact<\/strong>: <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> has been present in California since at least 1962 and has not emerged as a significant pest.\u00a0 Several trading partners might consider this mealybug to be a quarantine pest and its presence on plants or plant products could have trade impacts.\u00a0 No other economic impacts are expected.\u00a0 <em>Ferrisia dasylirii<\/em> receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Low(1)<\/strong> <\/span>in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
