{"id":1075,"date":"2015-09-21T13:53:24","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T20:53:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1075"},"modified":"2022-05-16T09:38:46","modified_gmt":"2022-05-16T16:38:46","slug":"hemiberlesia-ithacae-ferris-hemlock-scale-synonym-abgrallaspis-ithacae","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/Section3162\/?p=1075","title":{"rendered":"Hemiberlesia ithacae (Ferris): Hemlock Scale &#8211; Synonym: Abgrallaspis ithacae"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">California Pest Rating for<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Hemiberlesia ithacae<\/em> (Ferris): Hemlock Scale<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.33333;\">Synonym: <em>Abgrallaspis ithacae<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\n<\/span>Hemiptera:\u00a0 Diaspididae<\/h5>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Pest\u00a0Rating: \u00a0B<\/h5>\n<hr \/>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>PEST RATING PROFILE<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h5>Initiating Event:<\/h5>\n<p>On December 11, 2013 an official with Santa Cruz County contacted CDFA with questions regarding the risk associated with <em>Abgrallaspis ithacae<\/em> (Hemlock Scale).\u00a0 The current destruction of large numbers of Christmas wreaths due to the presence of the scale is considered punitive by some merchants.\u00a0 The insect is currently Q-rated, so a pest rating proposal is needed to determine future direction.<\/p>\n<h5>History &amp; Status:<\/h5>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Background<\/span><\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>Hemlock scale feeds on the undersides of the needles of several species of trees.\u00a0 The scale is only known to feed on Canada balsam fir (<em>Abies canadensis<\/em>), grand fir (<em>Abies grandis<\/em>), Colorado blue spruce (<em>Picea pungens<\/em>), douglas fir (<em>Pseudotsuga taxifolia<\/em>), eastern hemlock (<em>Tsuga canadensis<\/em>), and western hemlock (<em>Tsuga heterophylla<\/em>).\u00a0 Hemlock scale has two generations per year and overwinters as second-instars.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Worldwide Distribution<\/span><\/strong>:\u00a0Hemlock scale is native to North America.\u00a0 It is confirmed to be in Indiana, Maryland, New York, and Virginia<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 It is also reported from Connecticut, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and West Virginia<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 There are also published records from Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Oregon; however, these records are reported to be incorrect<sup>2<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Official Control<\/span><\/strong>: Hemlock scale is not known to be under official control in any states or nations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Distribution<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Hemlock scale has never been found in the environment of California.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>California Interceptions<\/strong><\/span>:\u00a0 Hemlock scale is often intercepted on shipments of Christmas wreaths, trees, and plants.<\/p>\n<p>The risk hemlock scale (<em>Abgrallaspis ithacae<\/em>) would pose to California is evaluated below.<\/p>\n<h5>Consequences of Introduction:<\/h5>\n<p><strong>1) Climate\/Host Interaction:<\/strong> Hosts of hemlock scale are restricted to the cooler parts of California but may also be grown elsewhere as ornamentals.\u00a0 The scale receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium(2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate if the pest would have suitable hosts and climate to establish in California.\u00a0 Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> Not likely to establish in California; or likely to establish in very limited areas.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u2013\u00a0<strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> may be able to establish in a larger but limited part of California.<\/span><br \/>\n\u2013 <strong>High (3)<\/strong> likely to establish a widespread distribution in California.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2) Known Pest Host Range:<\/strong>\u00a0 Hemlock scale feeds on trees in four genera in one plant family.\u00a0 The scale receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Low(1)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the host range of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> has a very limited host range.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>&#8211; Medium (2)<\/strong> has a moderate host range.<br \/>\n\u2013 <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has a wide host range.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3) Pest Dispersal Potential:<\/strong>\u00a0 Armored scales can reproduce rapidly and may be transported long distances through the trade of nursery stock.\u00a0 However, females have limited mobility so the trade in plant parts that are not for planting is not high risk for introducing the scale.\u00a0 It is likely that infested Christmas trees and wreaths will be disposed of as green waste, some of which may end up as mulch.\u00a0 However, the limited host range of this scale reduces the likelihood that the mulch will end up in close proximity to living host plants.\u00a0 Furthermore, hemlock scale overwinters as second instars.\u00a0 It is likely that cut trees and wreaths shipped in late fall and early winter will dry out before spring, reducing their viability as host material and eliminating the possibility of overwintering second instars completing development.\u00a0 Hemlock scale receives a <strong><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Medium(2)<\/span><\/strong> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the natural and artificial dispersal potential of the pest. Score:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; <strong>Low (1)<\/strong> does not have high reproductive or dispersal potential.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #008000;\">\u2013\u00a0<strong>Medium (2)<\/strong> has either high reproductive or dispersal potential.<\/span><br \/>\n&#8211; <strong>High (3)<\/strong> has both high reproduction and dispersal potential.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4) Economic Impact:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0Heavy infestations of hemlock scale are reported to cause early leaf drop, dieback of branches, and defoliation of trees<sup>2<\/sup>.\u00a0 This reduces vigor and severe infestations result in death of trees<sup>3<\/sup>.\u00a0 This has the potential to lower yield and crop value and increase production costs at Christmas tree farms and some forests.\u00a0 Hemlock scale receives a <span style=\"color: #008000;\"><strong>Medium(2)<\/strong><\/span> in this category.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate the economic impact of the pest to California using the criteria below.
