{"id":628,"date":"2025-10-03T09:34:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-03T16:34:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/?p=628"},"modified":"2025-10-06T08:26:09","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T15:26:09","slug":"fda-releases-new-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-related-to-agricultural-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/index.php\/2025\/10\/03\/fda-releases-new-frequently-asked-questions-faqs-related-to-agricultural-water\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Releases New Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Related to Agricultural Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On September 30, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/hfp-constituent-updates\/fda-publishes-agricultural-water-faqs-and-information-fdas-implementation-pre-harvest-agricultural\">constituent update<\/a> announcing new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma\/frequently-asked-questions-agricultural-water-requirements-under-fsma-produce-safety-rule\">frequently asked questions (FAQs)<\/a> related to the agricultural water requirements in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma\/fsma-final-rule-produce-safety\">Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule<\/a>, as well as updated information on how it will implement the pre-harvest agricultural water requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FAQs&nbsp;were developed to provide information about the agricultural water requirements based on topics covered in the final rules, including the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Inspection and maintenance of agricultural water systems,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pre-harvest agricultural water assessments (including testing as part of an assessment and assessment outcomes),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harvest and post-harvest agricultural water requirements,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corrective and mitigation measures, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agricultural water treatment. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA also released updated information about how it plans to implement the pre-harvest agricultural water provisions of the Produce Safety Rule. The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/food\/food-safety-modernization-act-fsma\/fsma-final-rule-pre-harvest-agricultural-water\">updated information<\/a>&nbsp;focuses on the key elements of the agency\u2019s approach to FSMA implementation, including education (for both industry and regulators), industry training, technical assistance, inspections, and compliance with a commitment to taking an \u201ceducate before and while we regulate\u201d approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><u>Pre-Harvest Agricultural Water Final Rule Compliance Dates<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compliance date for the pre-harvest agricultural water requirements of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule began for Large Farms<sup>[1]<\/sup> starting on April 7, 2025.
