{"id":186,"date":"2019-08-29T08:32:56","date_gmt":"2019-08-29T15:32:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/?p=186"},"modified":"2019-08-29T08:32:58","modified_gmt":"2019-08-29T15:32:58","slug":"produce-safety-program-supervisor-discusses-produce-safety-rule-impact-on-california-farmers-in-radio-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.cdfa.ca.gov\/ProduceSafety\/index.php\/2019\/08\/29\/produce-safety-program-supervisor-discusses-produce-safety-rule-impact-on-california-farmers-in-radio-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"Produce Safety Program Supervisor Discusses Produce Safety Rule Impact on California Farmers in Radio Interview"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Produce Safety Program (PSP) Supervisor Shelley Phillips was recently interviewed by \u201cFarmer Fred\u201d Hoffman on KSTE radio\u2019s \u201cFarm Hour\u201d program to discuss the impact of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR) on California farmers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CDFA created the PSP to \u201cEducate then Regulate\u201d California farmers about the PSR under the authority of the U.S. Food &amp; Drug Administration (FDA), in partnership with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). FSMA was passed in 2011 to help prevent foodborne illness outbreaks. PSR implementation and enforcement is occurring in stages between 2019 and 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a way for the FDA to be proactive about food safety\nrather than being reactive when we have outbreaks or other issues surrounding\nfood safety,\u201d Phillips says about the PSR during the interview. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Items Phillips discusses during the 10-minute interview\ninclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Which farms are required to verify PSR compliance and which farms are PSR exempt<\/li><li>What proactive measures farmers are required to follow under the PSR<\/li><li>The current stage of PSR implementation and inspections<\/li><li>How \u201csmall\u201d farmers (average annual sales of $250,000\u2013$500,000 during the previous three-year period) should fill out and submit a recent questionnaire that the CDFA mailed, in order to be prepared for the next stage of PSR inspections<\/li><li>What farmers should expect during all stages of a PSP inspection, from initial contact to a follow-up inspection report<\/li><li>The educational resources available on <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"www.cdfa.ca.gov\/producesafety (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/producesafety\" target=\"_blank\">www.cdfa.ca.gov\/producesafety<\/a> to help farmers understand and prepare for PSR compliance, including scheduling an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdfa.ca.gov\/producesafety\/educate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"On-Farm Readiness Review (opens in a new tab)\">On-Farm Readiness Review<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe inspector is there to assist the farmer, so any\nquestions that the farmer may have is fair game,\u201d Phillips says at the\ninterview\u2019s conclusion.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=19080\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Click here to hear the full interview (opens in a new tab)\">Click here to hear the full interview<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/plantingseedsblog.cdfa.ca.gov\/wordpress\/?p=19080\">.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Produce Safety Program (PSP) Supervisor Shelley Phillips was recently interviewed by \u201cFarmer Fred\u201d Hoffman on KSTE radio\u2019s \u201cFarm Hour\u201d program to discuss the impact of the federal Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) Produce Safety Rule (PSR) on California farmers.
