Conservation Burning and Biochar Production Workshop @ Lompoc (3rd), Paso Robles (4th), Soledad (5th)

3 one-day workshops on the practice of conservation burning and biochar production, using a cleaner, open agricultural burn technique.

Replanting of vineyards and burning of old vine material is a common practice by growers. By replacing conventional open burn methods with the conservation burn it is possible to reduce emissions from agricultural burns in your community while also conserving a portion of the carbon contained in the vines.

Attendees will learn how to save the carbon, also known as biochar, which can be used as a soil amendment and for many other applications including water filtration and pollution remediation. The workshop features both hands-on and classroom training. The morning classroom session will focus on the conservation burn technique, followed by a live burning demonstration in the field. This course will include the scientific theory behind the burning process, safety and permitting considerations, pile construction, burn management, maximizing production of biochar, along with other on-farm methods of biochar production.

Drip Irrigation System Start Up @ Sea Smoke Vineyard

This meeting is a walkthrough of Best Management Practices for starting up a drip irrigation system in the spring.

Intended for those who depend on, operate or repair drip irrigation systems in vineyards.

This special meeting will be in Spanish and English.

Jacob Hernandez of JH Ag Consulting will walk attendees from the well to the end of the drip hose stopping along the way to demonstrate how to prep the key points in the system before the irrigation season starts.

Jacob will talk about some common problems with irrigation systems and how to address them.

The goal of this meeting is to bring together experts, boots-in-the-field irrigators, and vineyard managers to share their knowledge and experience with drip irrigation system maintenance and repair and what they do at the beginning of the season to ensure the system works properly.

Climate Action & Agriculture Symposium @ CSU San Marcos

Developing relevant policies, programs, strategies and resources to support sustainable agriculture throughout Southern California is contingent on understanding changing climate and its impact to the unique agricultural environments and industry in the region. This symposium is intended to bring together policy makers, government agencies, researchers, educators, consultants and other public and private agricultural service providers. Crop Estimation Tailgate

Estimating yield is both important and difficult. Accurate projections of crop size are necessary for both logistical and financial planning. Growers will share their experience and wisdom when it comes to estimating a crop including their methods, tips and techniques. Different methods will  be compared and discussed. We will also dip into the theory behind making estimates.

Online Class

  • Access begins upon registration (login information will be emailed to you).
  • Full course materials require about 10 hours to view.
  • Online exam is optional but required for 10 hours of Continuing Education credit.

  • Takes place at Cal Poly, SLO
  • 8:00 a.m. start time on Day 1 (Monday)

Interested in learning more about how to use evapotranspiration, soil sensors, and the pressure chamber to improve your irrigation practices?  Want to learn how to irrigate better but don’t know where to start? Join us for an introductory irrigation training, where Phoebe Gordon (Orchard Crops) and Karl Lund (Vineyards) will teach you how to:

  • Convert hours irrigated into inches of water per acre
    Calculate your orchard or vineyard’s stored water
    Use ET to calculate the required water for your orchard or vineyard
    Use soil sensors to time irrigation sets
    Using the pressure bomb as a practice check or to manage reduced irrigation programs

Delta Corn and Small Grains Field Meeting @ Mello Farms

UC Cooperative Extension will host the annual corn field meeting on Tuesday, October 15th, from 10:00-11:30am, on Tyler Island in Sacramento County. The agenda is pasted below and attached. In addition to providing information on the annual corn variety trial, this year’s agenda includes presentations on nitrogen management for the upcoming small grains season. Western Alfalfa and Forage Symposium @ Grand Sierra Resort, Reno, NV

What is the Alfalfa Symposium?
The Western Alfalfa & Forage Symposium is a comprehensive program on the many issues facing alfalfa and forage crops.  Forages represent a major component of western farming and impact many other enterprises such as dairy farming, beef production, sheep, goats, as well as honey, agricultural industries and environmental issues.  This symposium covers topics ranging from economics and markets, regulatory trends, industry issues, pest management, forage quality, irrigation, genetics to impacts and the environment.  The symposium is a “must” for anyone interested in these important crops.

Organizational Process
The 2019 Western Alfalfa & Forage Symposium is organized by University Cooperative Extension Services of Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming, in cooperation with grower members of the California Alfalfa & Forage Association.  The symposium is currently in its 49th year, and is hosted by the California Alfalfa & Forage Association, representing thousands of California forage growers.

Who Should Attend?
Farmers, Pest Control Advisors, Certified Crop Advisors, industry members, agency representatives, Cooperative Extension personnel, and anyone who wishes to be informed about important issues related to alfalfa and forages.

We have also submitted an application for nitrogen management continuing education, which would help to satisfy growers’ continuing education requirement for the Irrigated Lands Program.
