The California Irrigation Institute hosts an annual conference on California water issues, water use efficiency, water quality, and surface and groundwater management. The conference features leading water industry experts, government agency heads, water district managers, innovative farmers, and vendors with leading water saving products. The sessions aim to discuss research results and practical field experience.
This short course will focus on the practical aspects of organic soil fertility management for fast-maturing leafy green vegetables and long-season strawberry production.
Topics will focus on the contribution of various sources of nitrogen for crop production, including mineralization from soil organic matter, release of inorganic nitrogen from organic fertilizers and composts, and the contribution of prior crop residues, cover crops, and irrigation water.
Growers, consultants, and those involved in organic soil fertility management will find this course valuable.

Registration for the 2018 UC Davis Extension Course: Principles of Fruit and Nut Tree Growth, Cropping and Management is now open.
The University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE) and University of California, Davis (UCD) Plant Sciences department are offering the annual two-week course from February 25th through March 7st, 2019 at UC Davis, CA.
Understanding the fundamentals of tree biology is essential to making sound orchard management and business decisions in the tree fruit and nut industry. However, access to educational courses on basic fruit and nut tree biology, and how it relates to horticultural practices, is limited. This course incorporates lecture, lab exercises, and field demonstrations to provide information on all aspects of basic plant biology and the relationship between plant biology and orchard management.
During the first week of the course (February 25 – March 1), leaders in tree crop research from the University of California will provide lectures on tree growth, development and pruning, dormancy and chilling, flowering, pollination and fruit set as well as many other topics critical to a solid understanding of fruit and nut orchard management. There will also be field excursions for hands-on field exercises and demonstrations.
The optional second week (March 4 – March 7) is a four day field tour throughout tree fruit and nut growing regions in Northern and Central California. The field tour includes visits to current UC experiments, processing facilities, and orchards in a wide range of tree fruit and nut crops.
This course is designed specifically for current tree fruit and nut growers and professionals and also for those with small acreage farms or new to the fruit and nut business. Attendees will receive a certificate after completing the course.
The fee is $2,850 for the entire course (plus the lodging cost for the field trips), or $1,850 for the first week only.

Estimating yield is both important and difficult. Accurate projections of crop size are necessary for both logistical and financial planning. Growers will share their experience and wisdom when it comes to estimating a crop including their methods, tips and techniques. Different methods will be compared and discussed. We will also dip into the theory behind making estimates.

Dr. Christine Jones, is a renowned and highly respected Soil Ecologist and Cover Crop Specialist. She has a wealth of experience working with innovative landholders to implement regenerative land management practices that enhance biodiversity, increase biological activity, sequester carbon, activate nutrient cycles, restore water balance, and improve crop productivity.
Dr. Jones joins us from Australia for a cover crops intensive focusing on carbon sequestration and regenerative soil practices. She has played a crucial role in the carbon credits program and regenerative agriculture efforts in Australia, and we are honored to have her featured in this intensive.
Additionally, we have gathered a panel of local innovative farmers to discuss practical application of cover crops for soil health. This will be followed by an open Q&A session to facilitate farmer-to-farmer learning.

Increasing yields per acre-foot of evapotranspiration (ET) through better fertility management will also be discussed.
After six years of providing in-person Nitrogen Management Certification training, stakeholders have been in discussions to find an avenue to help new CCAs qualify to sign off on the Irrigation and Nitrogen Management Plans (INMP). Limitations on the number of training opportunities and attendees has led the group to approach online learning and testing options to issue Nitrogen Management Certification after the March 2020 training. The March 2020 Nitrogen Management Certification in Fresno will be the final training available before the new Certification program goes into effect.
