Fava bean is an ancient food crop that is extensively grown and consumed around the world. In California, fava bean is largely grown as winter cover crop to protect the soil and add to soil nitrogen. In this field day event, several speakers will talk about the benefits and selection of cover crops for different cropping systems. We will also demonstrate a field trial that aims to identify fava bean genotypes with enhanced nitrogen fixation.

Estimating yield is both important and difficult. Accurate projections of crop size are necessary for both logistical and financial planning. Growers will share their experience and wisdom when it comes to estimating a crop including their methods, tips and techniques. Different methods will be compared and discussed. We will also dip into the theory behind making estimates.

UC Cooperative Extension will host a field day at the USDA-ARS Spence research farm to show a field trial evaluating water use in drip irrigated cauliflower. This is an opportunity to see first-hand the effect of water management on cauliflower production under drip.
We will discuss using weather data for scheduling irrigations using the CropManage online tool, water application monitoring using flowmeters, soil moisture monitoring using tensiometers, and the feasibility of improving irrigation scheduling using satellite-based tools. This is a joint project among UC Cooperative Extension, CSU Monterey Bay, NASA-Ames, and the USDA-ARS. Cooperators include Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. and Wilbur Ellis.

Want to learn how to irrigate better but don’t know where to start? Join us for an introductory irrigation training, where Phoebe Gordon (Orchard Crops) and Karl Lund (Vineyards) will teach you how to:
- Convert hours irrigated into inches of water per acre
Calculate your orchard or vineyard’s stored water
Use ET to calculate the required water for your orchard or vineyard
Use soil sensors to time irrigation sets
Using the pressure bomb as a practice check or to manage reduced irrigation programs
Seats are limited, so registration is required (but free!).
Come learn about cover crops from experienced growers and technical advisers at Davis Ranches in Colusa, with a focus on integrating cover crops into the management calendar and seed selection.

• Overview of CAFF’s cover crop in nuts project with Sara Tiffany (CAFF)

• Planning a cover crop – seed selection, lining up equipment, and deciding when to plant with Tom Johnson (Kamprath Seed)

About this Event
Workshop will cover:
1) how to choose the right kind of compost for your operation,
2) how to set up a compost spreader,
3) how to calibrate a compost spreader to ensure you are applying the rate you intend,
4) tomato yield and soil health outcomes of compost incorporation.
UC Cooperative Extension will host the annual corn field meeting on Tuesday, October 15th, from 10:00-11:30am, on Tyler Island in Sacramento County. The agenda is pasted below and attached. In addition to providing information on the annual corn variety trial, this year’s agenda includes presentations on nitrogen management for the upcoming small grains season.
