Conservation Burning and Biochar Production Workshop @ Lompoc (3rd), Paso Robles (4th), Soledad (5th)

3 one-day workshops on the practice of conservation burning and biochar production, using a cleaner, open agricultural burn technique.

Replanting of vineyards and burning of old vine material is a common practice by growers. By replacing conventional open burn methods with the conservation burn it is possible to reduce emissions from agricultural burns in your community while also conserving a portion of the carbon contained in the vines.

Attendees will learn how to save the carbon, also known as biochar, which can be used as a soil amendment and for many other applications including water filtration and pollution remediation. The workshop features both hands-on and classroom training. The morning classroom session will focus on the conservation burn technique, followed by a live burning demonstration in the field. This course will include the scientific theory behind the burning process, safety and permitting considerations, pile construction, burn management, maximizing production of biochar, along with other on-farm methods of biochar production.

Drip Irrigation System Start Up @ Sea Smoke Vineyard

This meeting is a walkthrough of Best Management Practices for starting up a drip irrigation system in the spring.

Intended for those who depend on, operate or repair drip irrigation systems in vineyards.

This special meeting will be in Spanish and English.

Jacob Hernandez of JH Ag Consulting will walk attendees from the well to the end of the drip hose stopping along the way to demonstrate how to prep the key points in the system before the irrigation season starts.

Jacob will talk about some common problems with irrigation systems and how to address them.

The goal of this meeting is to bring together experts, boots-in-the-field irrigators, and vineyard managers to share their knowledge and experience with drip irrigation system maintenance and repair and what they do at the beginning of the season to ensure the system works properly.

Applies to SIP Certified® Standards 2.6.8, 5.1, 5.2, & 5.3.5

Crop Estimation Tailgate

Estimating yield is both important and difficult. Accurate projections of crop size are necessary for both logistical and financial planning. Growers will share their experience and wisdom when it comes to estimating a crop including their methods, tips and techniques. Different methods will  be compared and discussed. We will also dip into the theory behind making estimates.

  • Convert hours irrigated into inches of water per acre
    Calculate your orchard or vineyard’s stored water
    Use ET to calculate the required water for your orchard or vineyard
    Use soil sensors to time irrigation sets
    Using the pressure bomb as a practice check or to manage reduced irrigation programs
