Cal Poly Healthy Soils Project 9:00am
The focus of the workshop will be on compost application in vineyards, but growers of any vine or tree crop are invited to attend. Presenters will discuss compost use from a variety of perspectives, and showcase the types of soil monitoring taking place at J. Lohr Vineyard as part of the three-year project. Growers interested in applying for their own Healthy Soils Program grant will be provided information about the application process for the incentives program.
Upper Salinas-Las Tablas Resource Conservation District Healthy Soils Project 12:00pm
The USLTRCD will be presenting on different cover cropping and management decisions as well as demonstrating how a soil sample is taken. Join us on this educational and social event to exchange knowledge and experience about nitrogen management in strawberry production on the central coast, while sharing a tasty seafood platter with fellow strawberry growers!
When: Friday October 11th, 10:30am – 1:00pm Where: 880 Airport Blvd Watsonville (Ramos Farms)
Hosted by RCD of Santa Cruz County, University of California Cooperative Extension (UCCE), and Ramos Farms
FREE admission, Please RSVP: (831) 224-0293
This event will assist attendees in understanding Distribution Uniformity (DU) and how it affects water use efficiency. Additionally, attendees will get a basic understanding of how water moves in the soil, how nitrogen (nitrates) move with that water, and how to keep nutrients and water in the root zone. This will assist growers with compliance for NMPs. Different examples will be sited. The event will provide CURES credits and for CCAs.

Join us for a Field Day and Farm Tour at River Garden Farms! Improving soil health can increase crop yield, attract beneficial insects, and lower your bottom line. Cover crops do all this and contribute to greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. Come, learn the ins and outs of cover cropping!
FEATURED TOPICS
- COVER CROPS are an amazing alternative to leaving your field fallow after harvest. Often applied as a mix of different plant seeds, cover crops help return N to the soil and reduce the amount of synthetic fertilizer needed
- NITROGEN MANAGEMENT changes when you install a cover crop. Learn how to estimate how much nitrogen is returning to the soil from the cover crop and incorporate that into your nitrogen budget.
- PEST CONTROL including using non-chemical methods in annual cropping systems with an emphasis on rice systems
FEATURED SPEAKERS
- Dominic Bruno, River Garden Farms
- Scott Park, Park Farm Organics
- Tom Johnson, Kamprath Seed Company
- Wendy Rash, Solano NRCS
- Whitney Brim-DeForest, UCCE Sutter/Yuba
The 2017 Healthy Soils Demonstration Project is funded by Greenhouse Gas Reduction Funds and is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing GHG emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment.
