And the food that goes in the trash winds up in a landfill where it creates methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On July Fourth and all summer long, USDA encourages consumers to use four simple steps to reduce food waste at home. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Plan ahead<\/strong> \u2013 Before you go to the grocery store or order online, make a list so you don\u2019t buy more than you need.<\/li><li><strong>Serve smart<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 portion control is good for your waistline, and good for reducing plate waste.<\/li><li><strong>Love your leftovers<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Pack leftovers in small portions in shallow containers, mark the contents and date, and refrigerate or freeze immediately.<\/li><li><strong>Compost, don\u2019t trash<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Food in landfills produces harmful methane.
